You'll embark on a fascinating walking tour to discover the iconic sites of the Palio di Siena, so you can live like a true Sienese for a few hours and discover stories and anecdotes with our expert local guide.
With our qualified English-speaking driver, you'll travel to Siena in a comfortable, air conditioned van and embark on a fascinating walking tour, accompanied by our expert local guide, to discover the iconic sites of the Palio di Siena, allowing you to experience the life of a local contrada inhabitant for a few hours. This tour begins at the Basilica of Provenzano, a key point of devotion in the city, the site where the connection between religion and the Palio begins, and a symbolic place of thanksgiving for the Palio, which takes place in July. You'll then reach Via Montanini, one of the main streets through which the historical parade passes, where you can admire the various symbols and flags of the 17 contrade (districts). The walk will lead you to the magnificent Piazza del Campo, with its unmistakable shell shape, where you can admire the lizza (track on which the race is held) and the Palazzo Pubblico with the Torre del Mangia, where all the symbols of the contrade are displayed. Imagine the square covered in tuff and packed with people! Then head to the imposing Siena Cathedral, where all the religious events related to the Palio take place, including the thanksgiving for the August Palio. Stroll slowly through the medieval streets, entering the districts of the contrade, such as the Goose, Snail, Dragon, and Giraffe districts (many contrade have their own oratory and museum, which can be visited, containing historical documents and photographs). It will be fun to look for the contrada fountain, which features the animal symbolizing the contrada itself. Each contrada has one, and they represent the contrada's baptismal font, a symbolic ceremony in which one officially becomes a member of the contrada and strengthens the bond with one's neighborhood. This tour can be integrated with two itineraries of your choice: -Visit the 17 district baptismal fonts to test your curiosity by identifying them and tracking down the district's symbolic animal. If you're interested, we'll provide you with a list of places to visit during a pleasant stroll. -Enjoy a tasting of Siena's typical sweets, panforte and ricciarello, in a historic shop just a few steps from Piazza del Campo.
